scenic practicum

fall 2021

In this class, we explored the process of set construction for productions. We developed skills by learning to use both power tools and handheld tools safely and effectively. Throughout the semester, we assisted with building the sets for the fall productions, we also had lessons on upholstery, painting, and other essential techniques. For our final project, we applied what we had learned by independently constructing a piece.

my final project....

My aunt was getting married in the summer of 2022. She gave me the idea to build something for her wedding. I decided to build a backdrop that guests could take pictures in front of for one of the events. So, I sat down with her to come up with a design that fits her theme.

the first sketch:

The second step was to figure out the measurements and how can I make it transportable.

The next step was to start cutting and building!

I did run into an issue. The sides of my hexagon were not lining up! This threw me off a bit. But I reassessed and realized that I need to align the pieces in a different way.

After I resolved my issue, I stained the wood and the glass mason jars.

I, then, put my 6 ft hexagon together. In order to make it transportable, I made these joints between the sides so it can easily be taken apart and put back together.

The final step was to decorate!

I was really proud at how it turned out! I sent my aunt this picture and she said she cried tears of joy :)

a few of my cousins & I!

Everyone at the wedding really enjoyed this backdrop! Everyone was taking pictures in front of it all night. The wedding planner and her team were so impressed that they purchased it and have since used it for other events. This experience was the first time I truly realized I am capable of achieving more than I give myself credit for.
